003: My hope for humanity.
Jun. 19th, 2013 06:41 pmIt's been a stressful day today. There was an incident very close to the deli. Two people, who I think were drug addicts, had gotten into an argument. They were yelling on the street, but that's nothing new. But one of them got into their car and they were still intoxicated. They crashed into another car, causing a huge pile up outside the deli, which injured twelve people and I think, killed the other, non-intoxicated driver.
I rushed out of the deli obviously, shutting it down and helped people into the deli and cleaned them up and helped them as much as I could before the ambulance arrived. Four cars had piled up and this one twelve-year old girl was trapped in her car and had serious damage done to her leg. I can still smell the blood and gore on my skin from when three strangers and I literally tore off the car door and smashed through the glass window to get her and her mother out.
But it's in times like this where you really see the kindness of strangers. There were a huge amount of people standing on the side, just taking pictures and gaping, but there were also people that went to help, like me, and that warms my heart and gives me hope for the future.
I don't know what happened to the strangers, but I can only hope that they will be recover fully. My first-aid kit is empty and my clothes are covered in blood, but I've never felt more satisfied with what I'm doing with my life. Even if my arms feel like I've been training non-stop for four days.

Date: 2013-06-20 02:45 pm (UTC)And I garnered a few cuts and bruises here and there from wrestling with the car, but since I wasn't involved the initial pile-up, there was nothing that could be counted as serious.

Date: 2013-06-20 07:21 pm (UTC)I applaud you though. Trust me when I say, that there aren't many people who move a muscle to help. Some of them can't be blamed, since they go into shock and freeze. Or they don't know how to help and don't want to cause more mayhem than there already is. But those that have the nerve to take pictures just make me seriously doubt humanity, at times. But alas, catastrophies have attracted humanity since ever. I'm wuite the same actually. Action movies, thrillers...I can't resist. It might be part of a reason why I work at emergency.
But it's still important not to forget to help, if you can. Which many tend to forget. You didn't however so...how many meters of bandages do you need? ^^

Date: 2013-06-20 07:51 pm (UTC)It's quite saddening really, how people will just sit there and stare when a tragedy occurs. But I wasn't surprised by the amount of people taking pictures. Social media has spread to every part of our culture now, and people like to show off that they were there at accidents and *survived*.
There's nothing wrong with catastrophes being interesting, but people should help out when it occurs and shouldn't encourage catastrophes either.

Date: 2013-06-20 09:06 pm (UTC)Yes, sadly the amount of those who will help is disturbingly low, comppared to curious onlookers. But then again, if everyone helped we would probably live in paradise and I'd be jobless xD.
I think it might actually be better if there are a few people who know what to do that help, than many people just running around, causing more damage, than there already was. You don't know how much damage a badly administered first aid can do. But I agree, that when you can, you should help. ^^

Date: 2013-06-21 01:44 am (UTC)....that's true. ^^; But in a perfect world, you'd have something else to do.
Yes, there are horror stories of people who have no idea how first-aid works. The government really should make first-aid a compulsory class in middle school and high school. It comes in such handy in real life.

Date: 2013-06-24 09:36 pm (UTC)I'm sorry for hijacking your post with Kamio. We get a little carried away sometimes. Which is strange because most of the time we're actually in the same room when we do this. In fact we are no and Momoshiro is looking at us strangely. We should probably stop it before he has just taken away by the men in white coats...
